What We Believe
Our Faith, Our Tradition, Our Values
Lutherans believe that salvation is God’s free gift, received by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not something we can earn by our own efforts. We look to the Bible as the inspired Word of God, trusting it as the sure guide for faith and life. At the heart of our belief is the good news that Christ’s death and resurrection bring forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and the promise of eternal life. Worship, prayer, Baptism, Holy Communion, and a life of loving service are central ways we live out this faith each day.

Our tradition traces its roots to the 16th century, when Martin Luther called the church to return to the heart of the gospel: salvation by grace through faith, the authority of Scripture, and the priesthood of all believers. His witness sparked the Protestant Reformation and gave shape to the Lutheran movement that continues today.

As members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), Holy Spirit Lutheran Church joins nearly 3 million Lutherans across the United States in proclaiming Christ crucified and risen. The ELCA emphasizes faith active in love, inclusivity, and partnership with other churches and communities for the sake of the gospel and the good of the world.
At the same time, Lutherans share much in common with the wider Christian family: the confession of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, faith in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and the use of Scripture for teaching, encouragement, and guidance. We join with other Christians in prayer, worship, and service to our neighbors. These common convictions remind us that while Lutherans bring unique gifts and emphases to the church, we are part of the one body of Christ throughout the world and across generations.
